Dietram
A. Scheufele is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication
at Cornell University, where he teaches courses in political communication,
campaign
strategy, public opinion, and research methods.
His current research is centered around two major themes. The first
theme is civic
capital and its relationship to mass media and communication among citizens.
How
do macro-social variables like social networks, but also individual-level
variables like
opinion leadership, feelings of personal efficacy, or knowledge shape
political attitudes,
cognitions, and behaviors? What role do different types of media and
interpersonal
communication play in this process? And what are the implications for
democracy in
America? His second area of specialization is public opinion on various
issues and its
formation and expression in democratic societies.
Dr. Scheufele has served as principal investigator and consultant on
a variety of
survey projects, including computer-assisted telephone surveys and face-to-face
interviews. He has conducted research for the Public Broadcasting System
(PBS),
the New York, Empire State Food and Agricultural Leadership Institute,
the German
Marshall Fund of the United States, the Natural Resource, Agricultural,
and
Engineering Service, and the Ithaca Journal.
